El chile cascabel seco, es de forma casi esférica y color café rojizo. Mide en promedio unos 3 cm de diámetro, y tiene cáscara tersa y dura. Es moderadamente picante, y de sabor agradable ligeramente se parece a la nuez. Cuando se agita este chile, sus semillas suenan como una sonaja o un cascabel, de ahí su nombre. Cuando está fresco se llama chile bola. Su consumo se concentra en los estados del centro del país, aunque no existen muchas recetas tradicionales que contengan como base este tipo de chile. Se prepara en salsas picantes rojas con jitomate o combinado con tomate verde y en ocasiones se mezcla con otros tipos de chile para dar más consistencia. También se muele con jitomate y otras especies para guisos con cerdo, pollo o res. Conocido también como cascabelillo.
